Расположена на территории штатов Пенсильвания, Нью-Джерси, Нью-Йорк, Мэриленд, Вирджиния, Теннесси и Алабама. Часть района - в Канаде. Длина 950 км, ширина 30-35 км. По долине протекают реки Камберленд [ Cumberland River], Теннесси [ Tennessee River], Шенандоа [ Shenandoah River] и др.
